# What You'll Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices rustic Italian bread (ciabatta or sourdough)

→ Spreads

02 - 3 tablespoons fig jam

→ Cheese

03 - 4 slices fontina cheese (or mozzarella or taleggio)

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices prosciutto

→ Butter

05 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# Directions:

01 - Preheat a panini press or large skillet over medium heat.
02 - Spread 1.5 tablespoons fig jam on each of two bread slices.
03 - Top each jam-coated slice with 2 slices of prosciutto.
04 - Layer 2 slices of fontina cheese over the prosciutto on each sandwich.
05 - Place the remaining bread slices on top to form complete sandwiches.
06 - Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich on both sides.

08 - Slice each sandwich in half and serve warm.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The fig jam creates a caramelized sweetness that balances perfectly with the prosciuttos salt
  • Ready in under 20 minutes but tastes like something from a specialty café
02 -
  • Rushing the heat results in burnt bread before the cheese melts so patience pays off
  • Letting the sandwiches rest for one minute after pressing keeps the filling from sliding out when sliced
03 -
  • Room temperature ingredients melt more evenly creating better texture throughout
  • Weighing down the sandwich with a heavy skillet works if you lack a press
